What I have learned from buying a blog

There are many things in life where you will only learn things by doing them. Buying a website is one of those things, if you have never had the experience of buying a site you will never really know how it happens.

In the past I have sold sites but never had the chance to buy one until this blog. The actual purchase of the site was straight forward, the part where you gain the experience is when you transfer the site.

Transferring domain names

There are two scenarios when transferring ownership of a domain name. The first is straight forward and one that I would recommend doing. That is transferring the domain between accounts within the same domain registrar. It's really quite easy compared to transferring a domain between registrars. To transfer a domain to a new account/owner can be a easy as typing in the new owners account username on a special transfer page on your registrars site.

If you have to transfer a domain between registrars then it's going to take longer and it is going to be more complicated. After trying the complicated route and failing I decided to go the simpler route. I would recommend that if you a buy a domain or a site that you create an account with the same registrar as the seller. It will make the whole transfer process quicker and less stressful.

Transferring FeedBurner feeds

Many webmaters use FeedBurner to manage the RSS feeds for their site or blog, Blogtalks is one such site. Whilst FeedBurner is great for giving you statistics about your RSS feed and is good at managing your feed there are a few things you should consider if you ever decide to sell your site or blog.

It is possible to transfer an RSS feed between two people, the seller already has a FeedBurner account but the buyer may not. The buyer must first create an account, the buyer can then provide the seller with their account username with which they can then initiate a transfer. The transfer is not instant and if there are any problems the transfer will stop. The transfer of the feed for BlogTalks took longer as the feed was using a FeedBurner service called FAN which meant the feed could not be a straightforward transfer.

Blog buying tips

If you are ever in the market for buying a blog you should keep a few things in mind. Check who the domain is registered with, transfers between registrars take longer and some domain extensions require a different transfer process.

Check which blogging platform the blog is running on and if there are any plugins or external services you need to consider such as FeedBurner. Moving a blog is never as straight forward as you would expect so make allowances for moving the blog to a new server and all that it entails.
