How I make money with Text Link Ads

October 24, 2007

There is a trend among some bloggers to publish their monthly earnings form their online ventures. Thilak started to publish his earnings on this blog but then stopped. At the moment I don't think it would be very useful for the readers of BlogTalks for me to publish my earnings. Sure it might satisfy your curiosity but how will it help you earn more from blogging or your other website.

Do what I do not what I say

A blogger recently said this (I forget who) and it struck a cord with me. You an read what others say but you can learn much more by seeing what they do. So rather than telling you how much I earn I will tell you how I earn.

I will start of today by telling you about one of my best earners which is Text Link Ads. If you haven't heard of TLA they are text ad brokers that sell text advertisements on your site on your behalf. I've been using them for a little over 18 months and they have been a good hands off consistent performer.

I have used TLA on several sites but the best performers tend to be one of my other blogs and my blog directory. This is not to say that other types of site will not perform well. It seems to take time for advertisers to find your sites listed in their database so it is worth sticking with them for at least 3 months before giving up.

Setting up Text link ads

When I first joined TLA there were two obstacles I had to overcome. Firstly was there large commission charges which by the way is 50 percent. Don't be put off by this as they do have a large ad buying base and it's money you wouldn't have earned if you didn't use their service.

The second was the set up. Now once you do have everything set up it does run itself so you can more or less forget about it. Except of course to see your earnings. For the set up your web host needs to able to process PHP or one of the other server side languages. If you use WordPress then set up is much simpler. It is basically a case of installing some code on your site in the location you want the ads to appear.

The other difficult bit is being able to change file permissions for a file they will tell you to create on your web hosting account, this is where they store the ads for your site. After it is all set up you will not see anything until they start to sell ads on your site so don't be concerned.

Text link ads not for everyone

TLA can work on most sites but may not be for everyone. They do take a large cut off an ads sold off your site but on the other hand it's revenue you wouldn't have otherwise been earning. They do have a large ad buying market including some of the big internet ad buyers such as Bizrate. It's one of the few advertising programs that has worked for me.

I'll cover some more of my revenue sources in future posts.
